Partly, Ed Gein lived in my mother's hometown and was arrested when she was in grade school. Her mother use to threaten to take her to his house whenever she was bad. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Silence of the Lambs and Psycho all use events of his life in their stories.

some people say it's loosely based on ed gein from plainfield wisconsin
Films
Ed Gein's crimes became widely known after Robert Bloch's novel Psycho was released in 1959, followed a year later by Alfred Hitchcock's seminal film adaptation; Gein was widely believed to be the basis for main character Norman Bates (Bloch later denied this in an interview). ***Also, the crimes largely inspired Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre*** and Alan Ormsby's Deranged, as well as parts of Thomas Harris' novel The Silence of the Lambs (in the form of the character Buffalo Bill). Gein's story was adapted into its own movie, In the Light of the Moon, starring Steve Railsback as Gein and Carrie Snodgress as Augusta. A movie released in 2003, House of 1000 Corpses, directed by Rob Zombie, contains a scene in which the character Captain Spaulding recreates Gein's crimes as part of his amusement park ride. The film American Psycho also referenced the crimes.

No.. The director got his inspiration for the film one day when spotting a display of chainsaws. However the character Leatherface was based on Ed Gein who was a Wisconsin farmer who robbed graves. His own mother allegedly engaged in necrophilia and cannibalism, and murdered at least two women in the 1950s (one of whose corpses was found hanging naked — decapitated and disembowelled — in Gein's residence).

It's loosely inspired by real-life murderer Ed Gein who apparently did wear human skin but did not murder his victims with a chainsaw.
