I was born in Detroit and some of my family still lives up there. I miss the ethnic food, as I live in Tennessee now. The food, entertainment, and activities can't be beat. The city itself has run down and is somewhat dirty. I used to love going to Canada, which is only 20 minutes away. You need a passport or birth certificate, plus a car search now to go over there. Thank 9/11 for that!

Detroit sucks. the only people that like it are the people that are from there and have never been anywhere else! The best things about it are 1. the world gateway airport (to get OUT of there) 2. restaurant La Shish 3. grocery store Fresh Market. Other than that, the weather is depressing, the roads are terrible, the place looks like a bomb went off and nobody bothered to sweep up after, in general people have an "it's all about me" attitude, it's an ugly place, no beautiful anything to look at, ebven the people are fat and out of shape and they smoke-alot-in their cars!! Everybody is driving around smoking in their cars with gray skin, and blue lips beause they can't get enough oxygen.. So many times people have asked me, "do you want to see a little peice of Heaven"? and I'm all excited like YES!! and they show me some garbage heap with dirt thrown over it and call it a mountain! I don't get it...I work with 12,000 people who don't get it either. If you have a chance to go anywhere else in the world :DO IT. I am a flight attendant, 80% of the flt attendants and pilots (at my company the largest airline in DTW, the planes with red tails) based in Detroit choose to commute (which is oh-so -stressful) rather than live in that dump. Save yourself, don't go to that place...the weather is miserable, the buildings are depressing, it made me feel as if I was living in a war zone, and I was in an upscale town and neighborhood. yikes. Save yourself..if you MUST be in the midwest go to Chicago-TOTALLY different vibe.

Living in detroit is the same as living in any other urban city. Its not as bad as some people make it out to be, but the city does have its ups and downs. Good meaning theres always some kind of festival or something going on in downtown detroit. Bad meaning there's people in detroit trying to make a living, but they are doing it the wrong way, i.e. stealing, selling drugs, and selling anything else they can get they're hands on. But what city doesnt have these things going on, its just more magnified, and vivid in detroit. other than that its a fairly nice city to visit.

Same as any other American city- there are some very wealthy neighborhoods, working class neighborhoods and then there are the "bad" parts of town. The city is home to a variety of businesses ranging from large international corporations (like General Motors) to small independent shops or diners. The city is home to major sports teams (Lions, Tigers, Red Wings; Pistons are in the northern suburbs), small universities, theater, music, performing arts, holds various festivals throughout the year (just held their international fireworks display which I think are the largest in the US yesterday), various historic and cultural museums, various recreational outlets, etc. etc. The city also has its troubles. The city and its surrounding suburbs may be the most racially segregated place in the country; as Blacks move into the city in search of jobs (starting during the 40's and 50's and ending in the late 70's), Whites moved out into the neighboring communities taking away money from Detroit (jobs, businesses, homes, etc). This "white flight" has led to economic decay in the city and many communities collapsed- becoming filled with gangs, drugs, violent crime, etc.; during the 1970's Detroit was known as the "murder captial of the world" and the city, decades later, still cannot shake this negative stereotype as the media continually reports on the city's negatives while, generally, ignoring anything positive. Due to the stereotypes, continue negative media coverage, and from their brief visits which may take them (quickly) through some of the decaying parts of the city, many suburbanites (usually White) have a sometimes warped view of Detroit; in addition many people, due to the media coverage, from outside the suburban area have never visited the city in their entire lives despite all Detroit has to offer. Further damaging the city, and actually most of southeast Michigan, is the declining market share of the Big Three domestic automakers; both Detroit and its suburbs based their economies heavily on the auto industry and are now suffering. From personal experience, I can tell you it can be difficult to find work which pays enough to support one's self in both the city and many suburbs as laid-off autoworkers and those that were laid-off from auto related industries re-enter the local job market to compete with the rest of the workforce seeking employment in the region. The city and various suburban areas have been trying to attract/give incentives to new businesses to move in in hopes of diversifying their economies and, to some degree, both have had some success; however Detroit and neighboring communities also often fight with each other instead of working together and job growth is very low/slow and, for those without jobs right now, times are tight. On the other hand, for those that have grown up in Detroit or the neighboring suburbs and have secure employment, the area has lots to offer and remains a good place to work and live- just like many other cities/places in the US.
Hi vclassi2 -thanks for adding your insight too.

I think Detroit is great. There is so much culture and fun things to do. Great Restraunt's and clubs. Greek Town, Piston's, Red Wing's, Sommerset Mall, Smaller surrounding cities liek Royal Oak, Birmingham and Rochester have so much to offer. I wouldn't live anywhere else on earth!
