Earth's rotation.
You can see an example of this in the water with a paddle. When you push the paddle through the water with the flat part partially out of the water, you see eddies, like little funnels, of water form at each edge.
That happens with air on the earth, but on a grander and more intricate scale. As the earth rotates the equator moves faster than the poles. The air is pushed harder at the equator, like the water being pushed by the paddle. The wind starts at the equator and swirls because of the difference of speed of the equator and the poles.

With a whisper... Actually it begins with a motion of some kind, the jet stream, differences in temperature or humidity meeting with each other, a wave of a hand, the push in front of static electricity within and around a storm formation, rotation, motions of water from below depth quakes, etc. There are lots of causes for wind origin.

wind begins when there is a pressure differential, which can be caused by many factors such as heating, geography, all sorts of things. Nature doesn't like things to be unequal so the high pressure air moves to an area of low pressure, thus you get wind.
