Everyone that was in the car crash dies and Ewan was there trying to keep him alive..so Ryan was like a ghost that was haunting Ewan...so when Ryan died at the end it was Ewan letting go and realizing that there was nothing that he could have done to change the outcome of things. At least that's what I got from it. Sorry I used real names instead of character names but they confuse me. lol

I can't really remember, but I though Ryan Gosling dies and the whole movie was in his subconscious, hearing the people trying to help him as he was unconscious and building a story in his mind like that and in that way brought Naomi and Ewan together in the real world. The only way Ewan and Ryan knew each other was through him trying to help him in the accident. At least that's what I remember...
