Your mom always wants to make a good impression. Putting Lipstick on before she talks on the phone sets her stage before she performs on the phone.

It always pays to look our best when dealing with the public. Of course it is more important when the public will actually see you - but haven't you heard people say that when you are on the phone at work you should smile, that the person on the other end of the phone will hear it in your voice? It is the same with wearing lipstick (or wearing a suit versus pjs and bunny slippers) - it is your state of mind that is heard in your voice over the phone. If the lipstick makes her feel more confident and comfortable when talking on the phone - why not?
Peace!

I hate the phone. But part of my job requires that I answer complex legal and technical questions from people in the field. It's important that I present a calm supportive attitude so that I can help them solve their problems. So no matter how busy I am or how harried I'm feeling, before I reach for the handset, I smile at that phone like Ed McMahon's on the other end, ready to hand me 10 million dollars. The caller can sense that smile because I'm upbeat and happy to serve them.
It's quite possible that your mother believes that people on the other end of the call can sense her attitude that every caller is important and deserves her utmost attention. She'd probably be good at MY job.

I won't go out of the house without getting fixed up first. No one has ever seen me without makeup and my hair done , if they did they'd never recognize me. It makes me feel good. If I answer the phone before I'm cleaned up, You can almost see it through my voice, people will ask, whats wrong, Nothing??? I just don't feel as spry, or perky. people sense that through a phone as if they were their watching you. I don't think its OCD, she just has a sense of pride. Be proud some mothers could care less what they look like. How embarrassing is that?

I'm presuming that your mom is "unattached" right now. Lipstick, like all other cosmetics, makes women feel more feminine, and therefore, more confident. You mom is probably meaning "because you never know when Mr. Right will be calling." My suggestion is, if she is unattached, is to see what you can do about setting her up with a dinner date or lunch. If she is attached, I would suggest the same to her husband.

Because she has problems and thinks people can see her through the phone. A good psychiatrist might be able to help. Yellow pages, lol. Just kidding, but it seems to be about putting on a face which means usually that being real and always having to look good or be perfect is a problem. Being happy is not about how good we look. I honestly never allow anyone to "see" me without my "face" on. No matter whether I actually have make up on or not I still behave as though I am prepared for any situation....I think this is all your mom is implying. Best wishes

You may talk for a long time and someone could come to the door and you wouldn't have time to put on your lipstick.
