leave it on.you might turn it up few degrees while gone and back down when get home.if you turn off you let all the humidity back in and it gets in rugs-furnither-walls,etc.and then your ac has to work twice as hard to remove it again.

Get a digital thermostat that you can program. I did it a couple years ago and saw a difference in my utitlity bill ( tracked it for 6 months). I run about 78 when I am gone and 76 when I get home. If you set at 75 or lower, your energy use is gonna increase 5% for every degree colder you go.
I set it to start cooling about an hour before we get home and the house is nice when we get there. I live way down in South Texas where I run my AC from April to almost October.

"Leave it On" responses are correct.

The issue is built up heat.

Real life experience in reverse. Mid 1990s

New Orleans had just had a week of some of the coldest February's in decades. Temperatures were in the low 30s at times.

My wife and I arrived at this hotel in the French Quarter in which the room had been vacant for a week, opened to a ground floor patio, the door had cracks on all sides that flies, if there were any, could fly through and was constructed completely out of brick and mortar and was very cold to the touch.

On checking in, the owner delivered extra blankets and a second electric heater to the room.

With both heaters going full blast and extra blankets, we froze the first night.

We left both heaters on the next day to warm the brick walls. The second night, with the warmed brick walls, one heater turned to low and without the extra blankets and with the openings/cracks around the door; we slept cozy.

Hope you enjoy the true story.

The same is true in reverse with AC in cooling

Leave it on but turn up the thermostat. Why have it real cool when your not home. Turn it down when home. You can also leave it turned up and then use a regular fan that blows across you for a windchill affect. If you let the heat build up too much during the day it will take much longer for the unit to cool it down when you get home and turn it on. Fans works good, with a fan blowing I now keep mine around 76-78 instead of 70-72.

I think it's better on all day cause a/c has something called thermostat that can calculate the temperature of your room and turn off the a/c automatically.
If you turn it on when you get home the room temperature is hot and the a/c needs more energy to cooling it.

If you spend more time in the house, then set the air-conditioner to low and keep it running. On the other hand if you are out of the house more often, then it would be better to switch in on only when you get home.

to save on energy, see that it's installed in a shaded area away from direct sunlight. also use shades on the windows and/or curtains to cut out the external heat.

Leave it on all day. Sent the thermostat higher than you normally keep it. Then turn it down when you come home. Or buy a programmable thermostat.

If you keep your therostat set between 78-85 leave it on all day, but if you really like it cold in your home, then you use it only when your home. At least in my experience.

keep it set high while at work, then it will keep the house evenly cooled and drop it when ur home and then ahve set high again after leaving for work, it helps as the day goes on and tmp drops after sun setting, unless it is just plain ole hot hot hot

Turn it off when not there. Why pay for something that you are not going to be using.

When there turn it to 78 or so.
