My sister's transmission broke in her 96' Ford Explorer XLT w/148K miles. KBB for fair condition is $3.6K for the Los Angeles area. Repair estimate is $1.5K.

Fix or Sell?

Replies are greatly appreciated.

Thank you. Hope everyone is having a nice evening!

If you love this vehicle and it is in good shape fix it. However, it is a more expensive vehicle to operate because repairs are somewhat higher. Ford makes a reconnditoned transmission for this vehicle for 2300 but installation is extra. If you can find a good rebuler who will do it for 1500 that is good. I had one of these in a 4 wheel version for 190,000 when I traded it no problems. Sometime I wish I had it back .

Sell it for parts or whatever you can get for it, no need to stick $1,500 into a 10 yr old vehicle that probably costs more to fix than it is worth, plus when you fix something on a 10 yr old vehicle you can bet something else will soon break. Nye

check your transmission. i can gurantee you have to replace it. if yo can't really move when your in drive, then its definatly that. it should be about around the 1000s range maybe like 1500? it cost a lot to get it repaired though

Considering the mileage I would sell or trade it in for 1 with lower miles

We are having considerable probs with these vehicles in Australia and I would sell. I doubt you could fix it for 1500 anyway. Jules auto tech and lecturer. Australia.

Scrap the Ford and get a Toyota, then you will never be let down.

On a serious note, I would check junkyards for a used but good tranny, its much cheaper.
