Ever since I got DSL, 60% of the time I try to use the internet, my Mac says that I am not connected to the internet, I click on network diagnostics and it says I have to restart the device. I go over to the router and have to unplug and replug the two adapters-first the top than the bottom in that order, so that my internet works again. I am sick and tired of getting up to do this. Our server says its not them, it has to do with the router but no one can figure out why this happens. I have to switch a whole floor just to get over to the router. Can anyone help?

Not without knowing who provides the DSL. What equipment you are using, specifically.

Without the exact specifics, all we can do is guess.

OK, LINKSYS Router. They are some of the best made. I have only known one to have a problem, and it was solved by performing a firmware upgrade.

Go to the website and check the model number to see if firmware upgrade is applicable.

I'd like to know the DSL provider and the maker of the DSL modem.

Also, how many people are sharing this connection?

I had a problem like that with a router made by SMC. It turned out I needed to update the "firmware" (the internal code for the router, basically) to update it with a bug fix they had made.

I would recommend you go to the manufacturer's website, look for a "Support" area and see if you can't download a more recent version of the firmware.

While you're there, if you don't have the manual/instructions for your router, download that too because it'll have instructions for how to run the update process. I've owned several routers now and they all had a very similar process. 1) download the firmware to your PC 2) log into the router 3) access screen where you can update the firmware 4) click the "browse..." button and navigate to where the firmware file is located 5) follow any on-screen steps (if any).

One HUGE word of caution: Once you start the firmware update process, DO NOT turn off your router or otherwise interrupt it. You'll "brick" it if you do (render it a useless paperweight).

Hope that does the trick in your case... good luck!

If your router is locking up like that, replace the darn thing. What are you going to do, fix it? Are the lights blinking when you look at it (when it's not working)? If not, it's locked up... and there is no magic fix for that... You can try replacing the cable to your DSL Modem - could be a faulty connection there.

Get a friend to loan you another one and stick it in for a while just to see if the problem goes away.

Cheers!

Is it a wireless router? If it is, try pushing the reset button. I have had this problem twice. I could access the internet on my laptop but not on my desktop. Once I reset the router I had no problems. Hope this helps.
