Can anyone please explain that one to me?

I think horse is old slang for heroin. I think the guys in America were no strangers to the drugs. I mean they're like in the desert and it makes them glad to think it was dead? WTF?

"because i've been through the desert on a horse with no name, it felt good to get out of the rain"..... my best guess is that, while the horse was significant, and his method of travel, he wasn;t important enough to name. maybe there was no attachment, so a name wasn't necessary. later in the song, he lets the horse run free. it's one more part of his life that lingers for a while before he forgets it. then again, the entire song is full of metaphors and double-meanings, so it's open for interpretation.
