The algebraic expression will be..

# shall be x.....

4x - (3 + x)

If you were to simplify it, not solving it...

= 4x - 3 - x
= 3x - 3

But if you were to further simplify it, (extracting the common factor out)...

= 3(x-1)

done... its a simplified expression of the original one...
