Tough question. So many styles.
Jazz - Avishai Cohen is doing amazing things with the upright.
Fusion - It's still Jaco Pastorius for me because he was the first guy to elevate electric bass playing to high art.
Rock - Tough one. So many genres. Changing so fast. James Jameson, John Entwistle, Paul Macartney, Les Claypool. All for different reasons. Listen to as much as you can. You'll learn from everyone you hear. Everyone who has arrived has arrived for a reason. Try and find it.

I'm older, but I listen to new music. I have to go with a tie between John Paul Jones who was with Led Zepplin, and Paul McCartney who played for the Beattles.
