History of Bumper Stickers
There is no recorded history (that we can find) concerning the origins of bumper stickers, though many have investigated the history. The following explanation makes sense, but we have no hard evidence to prove it.
Evidently, the first bumper stickers came about before WWII and were attached with metal wire wrapped around the bumper. After WWII, bumper stickers became useful in political campaigns. Once it caught on as a popular way to "get the message out", advertisers grasped the concept for commercial purposes and then came the broad appeal to use them for all kinds of slogans, often just for a laugh.
The true "king of the bumper sticker" is Forest P. Gill, a silk screen printer from Kansas City. Gill founded 'Gill-line' in 1934 from his basement, and later realized the possibilities of replacing the bumper wire attachment method by experimenting with pressure sensitive stock, hence inventing the modern bumper sticker which is in use today. Gill-line has developed into a multi-million dollar corporation with modern production facilities adding up to 240,000 square feet of operational space. Today, bumper stickers are big business, with millions of bumper stickers being produced and sold every year.

Gill-line was founded by Forest P. Gill in 1934 as a silk screen printing company specializing in the printing and decorating of canvas products. For the first several years, printing was done by hand in Forest Gill's basement. Since 1968, "home" has been a modern, efficient plant located on thirteen acres in a large industrial park in the midwest. The 1994 purchase of a warehouse located directly adjacent to our current facility brings our total capacity to 240,000 square feet. This new building now houses our Roll Label department as well as several larger screen printing presses. It also allows for future growth The Gill-line also includes a number of fundamental items used by automotive, manufacturing and service businesses. Other items such as Parking Permits and Lapel Stickers serve other basic needs. Gill-line produces a number of promotional items, too. These include Posters, Magnets, SUNbuster auto shades, Sticker Sheets; a variety of Plastic Products as well as a growing line of computer related accessories such as Mouse Pads, CDs, and Keyboard and Monitor Calendars. We recently introduced a new line of offset printed products including Magnetic Memo Boards, Mouse Pads and Magnets.
The primary method of production used by Gill-line is screen printing. Our popular custom decals, bumper stickers, posters, equipment signs and magnets are all produced by this method. A secondary line, roll labels, is produced on flexographic printing presses. These are primarily self-adhesive paper products. We also have several highly sophisticated presses, including a rotary letterpress, which allow us to produce labels with very demanding requirements. These presses are also designed to produce very large runs efficiently and economically. For more information please visit www.gill-line.com.
