The grade of gas is regulated by the government reguardless of distributor. Some stations like Shell, Chevron add deturgents, but gas is gas.

Shell Gasoline Grades

get a clue people. all gas is not the same. the octane rating does matter. the manufacturers usually provide the min. recomended octane rating. higher octane burns cleaner and more efficient. automobile grade gasoline can range from 105(race fuel) to 83(knock and clatter) every thing in between is a blend of higher and lower octane. jp108 is jet fuel. the only difference between the brands is the additives that are put in them. as to the difference in cost between one brand and another, it costs money to operate and maintain facilities such as refineries and tank farms(storage and transport hubs). if bp cost more than shell then they are probably upgrading a unit somewhere. you dont expect shareholders to pay for that do you?

If your engine is designed to use 87 octane, you will see no benefit from using higher-octane gas. In fact, you may even notice reduced performance. You should check your owner's manual to see what octane level is recommended for your engine. More often than not it will be 87. If you're looking for better engine performance, use a gas that has the best detergent. In my experience I prefer Chevron with Techron, a fuel-injector cleaner that is also available sold separately.

The grades are different. The higher the octane the better. Of course higher octane means higher price.

As far as brands they are all the same. Believe it or not, I read that most companies share the same pipelines, like from Texas to Illinois they pump fuel through one line. What happens is the fuel mixes together. So if you go to BP you night actually get Shell. What they do is but like 100,000 gallons from Texas, and they take 100,000 from Illinois, but they take it before it actually gets there (takes approx. 8 hours to get there.)

All fuels come from the same pipeline. The grades of octane are the same across the board. The difference in brands are the additives (like detergents) that they add to their fuel.

I like looking up these things because I learn so much along the way. I hope others also read it so they too will understand the importance of putting the right grade of gas in their car.

the octane is the octane, it doesnt matter what brand it is, look in your owners manual and it will tell you what your vehicle requires, dont go lower and dont try the 85% ethanol unless your owners manual or dealership says your vehicle will take it.you will make your car knock with lesser gas and you will burn the engine up if its not made to take the hotter burning ethanol.
