Yeah, sadly americans (USA) are really really bad at football and since they suck so bad they don´t care what its called, they just care about baseball, american football, basketball, hockey, but they don´t realize that the rest of the world plays FOOTBALL not SOCCER. They aren´t even good at their own sports... Argentina beat them in basketball lol. Come on!

CORRECTION for VAMPIRE LOVER: In english it is football, in spanish it is futbol.

According to the World Cup History Book website, the term soccer came into being as a result of immigrants from other countries coming to America and not wanting their beloved sport of football confused with the American version already being played here. To defferentiate, these new Americans took to calling the traditional game of footbal "association football" (why on earth such a mouthful it does not say). This was later shortened to "assoc. football" and finally to just "assoc". A peculiar habit of the times had folks adding an "er" to the end of words, so eventually a "footballer" became an "asoccer" which was eventually shortened further to just "soccer", and the name stuck.
So, while it may be fun to blame all ills in the world on the Americans, it was actually the Europeans who were responsible for the naming of the sport here. Not everything wrong in the world is colored by red, white, and blue.
Happy 4th everyone.

You know what? We REALLY have to put this football/soccer thing to bed. Soccer is an ENGLISH word, coined in ENGLAND - not AMERICA. The proper name for the sport is Association Football, and "soccer" is an abbreviation of the word "association", coined by the same people who called Rugby Football "rugger".

When we English folk introduced the game to America, the Americans called it soccer, because that’s what we called it. Then, when they developed what is now American Football (using Rugby Football as a starting point) they just called it "football" to avoid confusion with "soccer". And the whole reason it’s called "football" and not "handball" is NOT because you use your feet or hands, but because you are ON your feet, as opposed to being on horseback!

So: the all encompassing term for ALL the sports is FOOTBALL

Association football can be called either football or soccer
Rugby football is now just called rugby
American football can be called either American football, or just plain football
Australian Rules football...
Gaelic football...
Canadian football...

It's not only the Septics who call it Soccer- the South Africans do as well. Mind you they are just mini American clones with their "awesome", "amazing", "absolutely" punctuating every 2nd sentence. The soccer thing is no more than a misguided attempt to elevate their lesser sports to the same level as the peoples sport. Let them live in their dream worlds while the rest of us get on with playing football.

In Australia we call it soccer to differentiate between the three larger represented 'football' codes, rugby union, rugby league and Australian rules football. "Soccer" was originally called "association football" during the formation of the Football Association in England in the 1860s. So the word is derived from England and not the U.S.A, and the term was exported around the world by british workers and servicemen.
