myself and my brother both have sony double layer burners, and weve had no trouble burning double layer, what are you trying to burn to it? data or movies?

you dont necessarily need a double layer burner for movies, do a google search for dvd shrink, its pretty good software, and its free. if you cant find it, email me and i think i have the install somewhere on my tower still.

I have Sony DRU810 and a DRU820 and I am very happy with both of them. It could be the software you are using. I use the Nero program that came with the drives and I use AnyDVD to rip with. The only bad burns I have had have been due to my mistakes.

from a tech point of view (been one 20+ years) , sony works well...till the lasers burn out.
The LG series works as well, costs less, and the lasers last longer. plus they have a few more advanced features that many never discover till they need to backup a copy protected disc.
Just my opinion.

I actually LOVE mine. It's a Sony that's external....connects through a USB 2.0 (get a 2.0 card if you don't have one...they're pretty cheap and well worth it.).

Here's the model number: DRX-810UL
