The person who said Muskrat Love was by America and not Captain and Tennille, was incorrect. America was the first, releasing it in August of 1973 where it tiptoed up the charts to #67. Captain and Tennille released it in September 1976 and it went all the way to #4.
Why releases a song about two horny rodents?
Well, in 1973 Richard Nixon was President of the United States and it was a turbulent time. By 1976 Gerald Ford was the President and things started to cool down a bit. Ford was much more tolerant and I believe he even appointed a muskrat to a Cabinet level position. Of course, he also appointed several other rodents to important positions; especially, as Federal Judges.

Muskrats live in communal groups. During the 70's key parties and swapping were popular. I think it was a coded conspiracy to encourage infidelity.
