I know that the obvious way is to looks for papers and also the sweeping hand. Is there any other way to spot fakes?

The second hand on a rolex is perpetual, meaning it doesn't tick but rotates smoothly. Also real rolexes always say "swiss movement" in tiny letters on either side of the 6, fakes quite often say "thai movement" etc.

I used to work in a place in New York City where a one of the employees came in and showed off the Rolex he just got from a sidewalk vendor on Fifth Avenue for $5.00.

I think that's a clue right there.

Easy- if you are looking for papers etc. you are not getting any genuine watches because you are at the wrong place. You have to go directly to the watch shop that makes and sells them and you can be guaranteed you get a genuine one. They are very expensive too.
