The 80's were the pivotal point for underground rock music, so why when I say I enjoy 80's rock, everyone thinks I'm talking about the bloody Human League or Chaka Khan?

Someone used Hendrix in their answer. He died in '71! I'm talking more about Black Flag, Minor Threat, Asia, Faith No More, etc...

I think I know what you're looking for. Social Distortion was around in the 80's (they were formed in the 70's but they've been around ever since) the Misfits were also around in the 80's as were Iron Maiden and the Dead Kennedys. Siouxsie and the Banshees were around in the early 80's and even the Ramones were still around in the 80's. I hope that's the kind of stuff you were looking for.

Because that's what people remember from the 80's. It was in the theme songs for the TV shows (just listen to the theme song of Miami Vice) on more of the radio stations, and on the 80's stations today.

U2 and the Clash are pretty good and I wouldn't call them synth. Except I wouldn't call them underground.

Because those were the main stream, and most people only listened to (or only remember) the main stream.
