you return it? Immediately? Or think about it and do it later? Or
not at all? If you returned it, why? If not, what was your justification,
rationalization, etc?

Yes. I always return it immediately.

If it was short, I would say so. The same applies to too much.

I have been a cashier, and I understand.

I also believe that it is wrong to take what is not mine. Sounds sanctimonious, but it is true. :-))

I was at a gas station, bought a few drinks for the road, and gave the attendant a 5. The total was 4 and some change. Well, she gave me a 5 and change. So being the gentleman that I am, without hesitation, tried to explain to her that I gave her a five dollar bill. She immediately blew up at me. Before I could say five, not twenty which she was prepared for me to say, she started to yell at me that she knew that I gave her a ten. She even showed me where she put it.

Calmly, because I thought it was so funny, decided to try to explain again the misunderstanding. She, also without hesitation, continued to yell at me and accusing me of accusing her of being a liar. She then told me to leave!?!

Wow! I couldnt believe it. Even if I did think I gave her a twenty, what a mess to have to go through to get the correct change. Sure enough I left, probably with the same five I gave her, some extra change, and a few drinks to quench my thirst in the heat.

I cant wait for her to count her drawer.

Being middle aged (gasp) this has happened quite a few times. Some times I kept it because there were also times that I had been shortchanged and money was very tight. When I found out that it counts against the cashier, I started giving it back. I pay attention these days when they count my change back so I catch it right away. Also, money is not as tight these days. I'm not sure if that makes a difference. I hope not.

It happened to me about a month ago at one of our local Jack in the Box stores. I gave the girl a ten and she gave me back change for a twenty.

I spent thirtyfive years in restuarant/ retail management and clearly remember what "nosebleeds" the D.M.'s were about shortages and had no choice but to tell the young lady about her problem.

She had given me an extra ten dollar bill. When I corrected her she then tried to give me an extra five dollar bill. (This time I was tempted to take since her head was so far up her a##). I didn't have the heart to and gave her back her fiver.

I still feel pretty cool about it. I suggest everyone try it once, you feel damned good about yourself for the next few days.

I always give it back. The cashier could lose their job if their register comes up short. Some of you might say "Well they need to learn how to count". I know for a fact that even the smartest person can make a mistake like that. Especially if they have been working long hours and dealing with nasty customers and power crazy managers. Do unto others as you would have them to do unto you.

if I get too much change in a store and I notice it, I'll give the extra back to the clerk. too much hassle for the clerk when the drawer comes up short.

on the other hand, an ATM once gave me an extra $20 folded into the money I asked for. no way to shove it back into the machine, so I kept it!

good luck!

This just happened to me two weeks ago when I got a haircut. The woman gave me $1.00 too much in change. I gave it back to her because it wasn't mine. Granted, it was only $1.00, so it wasn't like the ultimate temptation, but I figure if I live right I got a better chance of having my life right.

Besides, I've seen enough My Name is Earl not to tempt kharma.

People make mistakes and need to be corrected or the world would be a mess. You sould return it and claim resposiblity for keeping it until then. I always return extra cash or demand the rest of my deserved cash back.
