the ocean - I got to visit my cousin in Pompano Beach Florida a year and a half ago, and saw the ocean for the first time in all my 53 years. I stayed a week, and we went to the beach every day from sunrise to sunset different locations each time, from her town to Miami. We even stayed until long after dark on the night of the full moon, so I could see what it really looked like over the water. Breathtaking. It was so awesome to walk in the waves and feel it swirling all around with a foam pattern floating lightly here and there on the surface, ever changing with the ebb and flow - what a feeling, tugging at legs and clothes while the sand squished up between the toes then covered my feet up to the ankles, only to have the waves clean it all away again until it next came rushing in. The sound is like no other - the pounding, swirling, rushing, and gentle sighing all at once. The waves were more active than usual I was told, and I got to watch some locals on their surfboards enjoying the lift they got from each swell. The smell was not as fishy as I thought it would be - more crisp and refreshing, rejuvenating with hints of saltiness in the air - and yes a bit of fishy odor too. The birds (pipers) are fabulous to watch as they run in and out with the waves in an effort to snatch something up. The gulls and terns called to each other all the time, and they were not afraid to land nearby and walk around as if they were saying "we were here first but are willing to share". A crab came washing ashore for a bit, and I picked him up - how cool he looked all pink and beige spotted with hints of blue and purple. I let him go and he scampered back to the safety of the waves. We gathered huge chunks of dead coral that had broken off from somewhere deep in the ocean so that my cousin could use them in her garden (she lives 3/4 mile away from the beach). It was shortly after the tsunami had hit, and the broken coral was one of the effects of the tsunami reaching all the way to Florida but of course by then greatly lessened. Those corals were alive probably miles out, but finally had made it to shore long after their death. Of course I had to make a sand castle regardless of my age while my cousin just relaxed and sunbathed. It was as if I were a small child - fascinated with it all, the water, the people, the sand, everything, but mostly just watching and listening to the waves. That was my most favorite thing in the world, to have finally seen and touched the ocean. I yearn to go back but have not yet had the chance... but I will.

The sunrise. As disgustingly cheesy as it sounds, the sunrise invigorates me like nothing else can. In the morning, when the sun is rising, you can do anything at all. It's during the day that all your ambitions fall to pieces around you.

Besides, all those colors are really beautiful.
