Maybe because in college you are paying for it and you feel that you shouldnt have a dress code. While I am against anyone wearing anything thats racist, infringes a riot, or is just downright disrespectful, I think that many college kids feel that college is their experience, and their time to find themselves.

Because the student is rebellious and does not like being told what to do.
Before having this problem, the student should have checked the dress code out before enrolling to see that it fit into their desired dress mannerisms. B
If you aren't going to follow the rules, change schools. It really gives you a bad name and you surely don't want that!

Dress codes lead to rebellion and students in college are trying to figure out their own life and a dress code just messes up that flow.

I understand that many young people think that they should have free rein to wear whatever they like on campus but am glad that our local university has set very specific limits on what it will and won't tolerate. It had to. We had young ladies coming into class in men's pajama bottoms, flip-flops, and babydoll pajama tops. Then again, maybe I should just turn a blind eye and keep my conservatively well-dressed opinion to myself at least until I get all those letters of recommendation from my professors that those other young ladies won't be getting because they chose to make a bad impression.

It's a matter of choices. If you don't want to conform to a dress code, don't choose a university that has one.
Those who choose to attend should follow the rules of the university. Simple.

Because today's young generation is a rebellious one, and they have no concept of rules, regulations and how to fit into society without causing trouble.
Think of the world as one big tribe. Let's say, for instance, there are 100 tribemembers who are living in the jungle. They have been getting along for generations.
Then comes along a few tribe members who are controversial and troublemakers. They upset the order of things and other tribe members say...what is wrong with you? Why can't you get along with the rest of the tribe?
If you want to get along in this world and be successful, you need to learn how to live in the group without a rebellious attitude.

Maybe they didn't know there was one and therefore they wouldn't know they weren't wearing the right clothes. I've tried searching for a dress code on my college's website, and I can't find anything about one.

If I was paying tonnes of money, I wouldn't want people dressing all crazy and distracting me. On the other hand, if I was paying tonnes of money, I would want to dress however the hell I wanted.. on the other hand, if there was a dress code that I didn't like, I wouldn't have went to that school... on the other hand.....

Thinking back to when I first started college, one problem was living on the the dorm, working at the college, class load, and still trying to find time to hang with my friends and party from time to time. This doesn't really mix.
I'd find myself trying to drag myself out of bed with 15 minutes to get to class. This doesn't leave any time to worry about what you have on sometimes.
However, I found with a little extra planning the night before, and having everything laid out before going to bed, and limiting dates and parties to the weekends, I soon got it all together.
Remember that for most of them, this is their first time away from home, and they're not used to handling their own business. It has been done for them all of their lives, and they are brand new adults. Give them a little more time to get themselves acclamated to college life, and they'll figure out the right things to do.
It worked for me, and I turned out all right. I am now a mother of 2, I'm a teacher, and I graduated from DePaul University in 1985.
