They sell 'em on the sidewalk in Chinatown... In San Francisco, and New York... Probably other places, too...

most chain type pet stores carry Red Eared Sliders, a good turtal for a beginner. They don't get all that big. Usually only about 9" shell diameter or so. They are only about $30 or so. Do a lot of research before buying a turtle though. They need BIG tanks. You could probably house 1in a 50 gallon tank, or 2 in a 75 gallon. You have to make sure that the tank has both dry land and water in it. The water needs to be deep enough for them to swim, and they need to be able to climb out of the water onto the land. Turtles are dirty, so you will have to invest in a powerful filter for the water side of the tank or the turtles will become infected with bacteria from their feces. If all this sounds like a bit more than you are ready for, maybe get a tortise. I've seen them in pet stores too(small species) and they are a LOT less work. The setup for a tortise is similar to that of a Leopard gecko...Tank, heat lamps, food, water, and shade. Hope this helps

PetSmart, Petco, PetLand, a local pet store. Check your local mall for a pet store as well. Even online try searching on ebay and many other sites. Also, try your local animal shelter as well for a discounted price for a baby turtle. Good Luck.
