They're great, initially expensive, but very cheap to take care of.
Not as much personality of rats, but they have fur thick enough they don't get fleas, they don't get wet, and they have almost no odor. Make sure they have a dust bath to roll around in (Ash is recommended), and they eat lots of roughage (Sticks & grass).
They're supposed to live about ten years. Mine only lasted 5, but I don't know how old he was when I got him.
Down side: They need a really big cage and do not deal well with heat at ALL, they eveolved in the high Andes, so are used to cold temperatures. If you live in a hot climate and don't have air conditioning, forget it. I was in Seattle when I had mine. When it got hot I had two coffee cans full of water, one would be in the freezer, the other in his cage. It provided some coolness for him, and he'd lick the side of the can to get water. in the morning I'd switch the cans out so he had a fresh frozen one for the rest of the day.
Get a male, the females spray.

You and your family MUST make the decision on that.. YOu know what it takes to take care of a pet and if you are sure you can give it LONG TIME care and want to have a pet and enjoy having a pet.. then do it

They're are so cute -- don't forget you'll need to do those dry baths to keep the coat nice. I love the way they look but have shied away from having them as a pet.

Not unless you can get a very young one. Or, one that has been handled a lot! They're spastic and somewhat antisocial at times. I've even had one try to urinate AT me from inside his cage. I think they're evil gremlins in the body of this cute, fluffy rodent.
