Yes...When traveling, stay with the tour and don't wonder off in any country where you don't speak the language.

Find our what particulars are afforded the tour before you sign up. Will you be going to any museums, sporting events, opera houses, etc...

And, always remember in any foreign country, you are the foreigner.

I think that the travel industry can only do so much. The efforts of the travel and tourism industry combined with the efforts of the government is just about all we can ask for.

I've personally never had a problem while traveling and don't know of anyone that has. However, I know how important it is to use common sense while traveling. I always avoid any areas that I don't trust, if I am alone I be sure to extra precautions, I'm extra careful when out at night, etc. There is a point where others have to step aside and let the traveler take responsibility into their own hands.

I think if you look at most cases where there was crime, injury or even a fatality in the travel industry, it was pretty much beyond the control of the company. Generally there is something that could have been done by the traveler to prevent the situation from happening. However, there are some cases where it really is beyond both parties control.

But I definitely think the travel industry is doing everything they can to keep tourists safe. If they didn't think they were, they would do more if at all possible. These people are what keep them in business by coming back themselves and also referring others. One small mistake could really put their company at great risk.

So I do feel safe that the travel industry is trying to keep travlers safe. At the same time, I am aware that something could happen that I cannot control, nor could the industry.

The last thing they want is a tourist to die. It would be an international incident. Just don't get your panites in a bunch about what happened to you.
