Carry one binder with folders in it for each class. In that folder, try to keep just what you have done in the last 5 school days. You shouldn't need anymore than that, unless you are working on a major research paper in class. At home, keep everything else (notes, returned papers, etc.) in either file folders or binders. Try to find a back pack on wheels if you can take it too class with you or it will fit in your locker. Try to figure out how often you can get to your locker, and get there as often as possible. That will reduce your load during the day. On the way home, take what you need to have, not every single book. If you don't have homework in Math, and understood what was covered in class, leave your book at school. The front pockets on a backpack are a great place for pencils, pens, calculators, and anything else small. Good luck and I wish you all the best. Just remember, stop and have a little fun along the way. Grades are important, but so is enjoying high school too.

Use a 2" binder with colored dividers as the binder you carry everywhere, and then transplant the papers acquired during each week into folders or other binders as was suggested above. Also, make sure you have a good backpack, one with a hip belt and TWO SHOULDER STRAPS (and none of those trendy, ergonomically disasterous messenger style bags). Lastly, given the rise in ergonomics, you can be smarter than all of your classmates by carrying around a rolling briefcase or rolling suitcase and just wheeling your materials hither and yon through the school.

One thing I used to do was have one binder of what I needed for each class for the day and then have "storage binders" to put the old stuff in as I didn't need it for the day, but I would still have it for studying later. You should also try to go to your locker more often and/or carry some binders in your arms, not just your backpack.

They make collapsable carts like you see at the airport, but they're designed for school books, you might consider one of those if you have lots of books too.

Why not get just two three ring binders divided by tabs into three sections, then you just take notes in each individual section rather than carry one binder for each period. You carry one for morning classes and then swap in your locker at lunch for the one for the afternoons.
