Stanza Chad is on the right track - if your voice mail works like mine. When I dial my voice mail from another phone, I'm actually dialing my cellphone. When it doesn't answer, and Voicemail picks up, I have to hit # then my password (five digits in my case).

call your cell phone number and hit # when the voicemail picks up.

usually you dial the number and when voicemail picks up, press the * key.
