Although flag burning is a way of expression and speech; it incumbent on the people to have the power of discerning and judgment to first to hold the flag at a higher level, due to its indelible nature as a symbol of a larger group, and second to exercise decency not to desecrate or disrespect it.
The power of this discernment is in each one of us.
Even though we have the freedom, would we use bad and fowl language at a time and place where etiquette and decency is called for?
The respect for an association's symbol should precede the choice of words or action. As a society matures and elevates itself it will understand the need to holdback certain disrespectful acts even though they may be expressions. Why do you think a free people of social maturity do not express themselves disrespectfully? This difference will be learned by acknowleding the self is less important than a democratic society and reciprocity of respect. Until we learn the to respect we would need to make it illegal.

I personally feel that the flag burning issue is just down right disrespectful and childish. The American Flag represent's Our Country! Freedom for all. Not just the United States Flag Any Country's Flag. The people whom do these types of Immoral,Childish, and Disrepectful Actions Ought to be Punished to the Full Extent of the Law! Some people will Stoop to this Level of Ignorance, Should be Treated with Ignorance. Yes, it should be Illegal and now, You all know why!

No, I don't think it should be illegal. I hate watching the flag burn, but so long as the individual owns the flag and doesn't burn it in a way that could cause harm to others (or to others' property), there is nothing illegal about it. The Constitution permits people to protest (flag burning is a form of that), and to freedom of expression (flag burning is a form of that, as well).

Personally, I think it's great that the very laws that allow flag-burners to burn the American flag are the laws they are protesting. Seems a double-edged sword to me, and if you see a flag-burner, just point that out to them. Explain to them that the soldiers they diss, are the soldiers who gave them the right to burn that flag. Without the very laws and people they are protesting against, they wouldn't be allowed to say what they want, or to protest what they want.

no,it is people's constitutional right to protest and to express their opinion.I think it's funny how emotional so many Americans are about a symbol,a flag.,while over150000 civilians have died in the Iraq,a war we ,Americans created.Shouldn't our hearts be more sensitve to the reality of American deeds than a flag? Most Americans don't see that may of our own former rights and freedoms along with our democracy are being destroyed. That is of far greater importance than a19th century convention,a flag.

Sadly, too many youth are not taught respect for many things, including the flag. We shouldn't have to have a ban because Americans shouldn't want to disrespect their flag but since so many don't show respect, we need a ban to help them understand.

I think the thing should have been passed to outlaw the burning of the American Flag.

No, because its just a piece of cloth. A person shouldnt be arrested for burning a piece of cloth that they own, its their property.

Do I advocate flag burning, no. But I am 100% for freedom, and having such laws takes away a part of those freedoms.

While it may be constitutional, those of us that are offended by that repugnant activity should be LEGALLY able to forcibly stop potheads from burning our flag by any means necessary.

If fire is speech, then in order to protest government overstepping it's bounds we should be able to smoke tobacco in restaurants, public buildings, ect.

To keep true to the constitution, there should be no ban on it. However; that won't stop me from pounding the crap out of someone who does it. If there's a crowd, I have a can of bear mace to use.
