I know its been hot these days and I turned on the AC a couple of times while being stuck in traffic. And when I got home, even after I turned off the engine, the coolant was boiling. I don't know whats wrong. Do I need to put in more coolant?? I don't know much about cars. And what am I suppose to do with the coolant that's still in the coolant tank??

I'm not very car savvy so I'm not sure about all these car termonology. But the temp on my car looked okay when I turned it off. But once I got home today, I could hear the coolant boiling. And I've never put in coolant in my car...ever. So I'm thinking I might just need to put in more coolant. The boiling stopped after 30 minutes or so. So what's exactly wrong with it? Do I just need to put in more coolant? Or is it more than that? And isn't it dangerous to drive my car?? So then, how am I suppose to take it in to get it repaired?

I also forgot to mention that the cap that closes the coolant is broken..so its open. I don't know if that makes a difference... =(

A few things could be wrong. The water pump has stopped working, you are low on coolant due to a leak. Try adding more coolant and inspect the belt that goes around the water pump. Also you might want to flush and refill your coolant system to make sure you get all the dirt and grim out the radiator. that could cause it to over heat.

1 problem that it could be is that in your thermostat located on your engine is not opening and closing properly .when a car engine reaches a certain temperature the thermostat is supposed to open wide to allow your coolant to flow freely thru the engine and thru the radiator hoses. when a thermostat doesn't operate properly it will cause the engine to over heat.look on your dash board there will be a symbol which represents a Temperature thermonitor it has c for cold\ and h for hot their will be a needel on their when a engine in not running needel will be on the c .Run your car for a littel bit look on your dash board and see where the needle moving to, normal position of this needle is between c l h .If you see it going up and up that means your thermistate is not working expessilly when its climbing towards H symbol.but if thermostat stays in middle ok.2nd you may want to look under car to see if any coolant drips are on pavement if so this could be your coolant pump wich cerculates the coolant thru out the engine is going bad.hope this will help.

I'd be getting it looked at IMMEDIATLY before your up for a lot of dollars.Could be a few things from a faulty thermostat or the water-pump, a blown head gasket or a cracked head.Believe me,what to do with the coolant in the tank is the least of your problems.Get it checked out NOW!

first thing is, DON'T DRIVE IT until you know whats wrong and have it fixed, could get worse and ruin the motor. If it has a electric cooling fan it could be bad, a fan not running while your stuck in traffic will definitly cause it to run hot cause your not moving air over radiator. If coolant was leaking out, could have bad radiator cap, hole in radiator, hole in a hose....list can go on, check those things first.

First check if the radiator fan is working and if not working as soon as you turn your jeep on than it should be the relay sensor to the radiator fan abbout $70 it will cost
Second make sure when you use your AC that you cut it of before turning your engine off.
Happen to me once and second time to my husband
The radiator has to be cool to provide power to your AC and if your not careful it could short circuit as I mentioned your relay sensor
and maybe you could do the work yourself I found that the radiator fan relay sensor to my Jeep Cherokee was under my passenger head lamp 2 screws and a plug in relay that easy

it is quite possible that you blew a head gasket.
this puts pressure and combustion gas into the coolant and appears to boil.
check spark plugs to see if coolant is in any cylinders.
and yes it is quite expensive to fix.

Well, if it only happened this one time, you should probably be OK. If it does it too many times, you'll blow up your engine.
Take it to a reputable shop and ahve it checked out.
