I have 2---first, it's gotta be Janis Joplin--her raw sound and unrelenting vocals opened the door for women rockers of today.
Next, Jimmi Hendrix, another raw individual whos style was unlike any other. These two artist did their own thing and made an undeniable mark on the music of their time.

I AGREE. EXILE ON MAIN STREET IS BY FAR THE VERY BEST( AND UNDERRATED) ALBUM THE STONES EVER DID. JUST FREAKEN EXCEPTIONAL. THE WHO, THEY WERE ALSO A GREAT ROCK AND ROLL BAND AND THEY STUCK IT OUT~ SMASHING GUITARS AND THAT WAS NEVER HEARD OF AND THEY REALLY MEANT IT. SO IT FOR SURE ONE OF THEM. Billy Joel is my favorite solo artist...but no one knows who Billy Joel is...
But still...greatest song was Piano Man (not my favorite, but most well known.)
Best album was Greatest Hits 1 (it went platinum along with half of his other albums...he's tied with my choice for the best band for most platinum albums...and yet no one even flippin' knows who he is anymore...)
So then the Beatles have to be the greatest overall rock band ever. For crying out loud, they SINGLE HANDEDLY started a Revolution.
RUBBER SOUL is their best overall album.
Let It Be is their best invidividual song.
Also...to alienate almost everyone else on this page...
Aerosmith and the Stones both suck IMMENSELY.
