I am a nurse, and at the time I was a student working in the intensive care unit. My patient was admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of anaphylaxis, which is medspeak for a severe allergic reaction. It turns out that she accidently took her husband's HIV meds and had a bad reaction. As a student, it is much easier to ask questions that others might not feel comfortable, but if you know the Diva it's just my way, people open up to me. So I asked her how she contracted the virus. Here's her story as it was told to me...

She was married to a man, back in the 80's and he became very ill. In the beginning, they thought it was Legionnaire's disease. At least that's what he told her and she believed him. His disease process advanced. He was dying. The doctor's told him he better tell his wife, or they would. So he told her he had AIDS. They had been trying to have a baby, even up to the time he told her. She knew she was positive, but she was tested and the results confirmed her intuitions. She was devastated. Shortly after, her husband died leaving her a widow to four children. But I mentioned another husband. Did she give it to him? The answer will surprise you.

People think that HIV/AIDS is a death sentence. But with the advances in medication and what we know about disease transmission and health promotion, people can live as long as 20+ years. My patient has been positive for 20 years, so has her husband. She did not give the disease to him, he already had it. This is how they met.

After her diagnosis she turned to meetings for support. This was a group specifically for persons with HIV/AIDS. She met her current husband there and no he wasn't gay. He was a widower and had been married for many years to a woman from a foreign country. Here's his story...

He contracted HIV from his wife. She was in a foreign country having a surgery which necessitated a blood transfusion. This took place back in the 80's before blood was being screened. Before symptoms manifested, she had passed it on to her husband. He also found out once she was nearing the end of her life. When he met my patient, he had already been positive for 10+ years. His T-cells are as high as any healthy person. Why because he and his wife take very good care of themselves and they support each other throughout the disease process. They still work, they enjoy their children and grandchildren.

HIV can be managed the same way that people manage Diabetes or Hypertension. You just have to be committed to staying healthy and protecting others. That means being honest about your lifestyle and always using condoms. I can think of at least two other situations where a person contracted AIDS and wasn't gay. One a set of twins with hemophilia that both contracted AIDS from a unscreened blood transfusion back in the 80's and the other is an aquiantance with a promiscuous husband. All three have already passed away. Kids can get it from being born to a mother who is infected. Believe me, ANYONE can contract HIV/AIDS.

AIDS isn't transmitted. HIV, the virus that causes AIDS is. Only when your t-cell count falls below 200 are you classified as having AIDS.

Anyway, studies show that HIV is currently being transmitted more in the heterosexual community than in the homosexual community. The rate of infection is the highest in young females and is particularly high in African-American women.

The way AIDS was transmitted was when a straight guy had sex with a monkey- i would not even lie about something like that.

Yes, actually last month at our clinic we seen a 16 year old female who had contracted HIV. She has only had two sexual partners both men under the age of 18. She has never used IV drugs, had a blood transfusion, or had any other risk factors. Both of her parents have tested negative.

So from this her only risk factor was the sexual intercourse.

This is unfortunately a disease that does not discriminate anyone can be infected regardless of you sexual preference.

Yes, I've personally known men who gave aids to their spouses from heterosexual intercourse.

I just covered this......and sex with a monkey I don't bloody think so. It began as a mysterious disease originally considered a cancer. They began to research and realized it was an immune system problem compromised by too many bad white cells and no Killer T cells, which we all have that kill viruses.

study a e book call "And the Band performed On". that is incredibly exciting. The affected individual "0" ( considered as first affected individual ) became a Canadian Flight Steward who traveled alot, infecting others all over the world. His very last call became something like Guytan. It became around the end of the 1960's. i imagine the author of the e book is Randy Shilts.
