No they aren't, check out this from an article:
Owning a ferret in California is a misdemeanor punishable by a $1,000 fine and the loss of the pet, which then is deported to one of the 48 states that do permit ferrets. At agriculture inspection stations, such as the one at Yermo, officials look not only for ferrets but also for signs of ferret food and ferret cages.

Check with your state authorities before you put yourself in a bad position. If they have been legalized recently I can't find any news about it.

No, they are illegal in California and not only will you get a pretty large fine and your ferret taken from you they usually put them down unless you pay to have them shipped to another state and the costs of paperwork for doing so and any fees that the adoption agency requires. Also ferrets are a lot of work about 5-6 hours a night need to be spent with them 4-5 hours supervising thier out of cage time because they will get into everything and there are so many things that are dangerous to them (some like to eat the buttons off of remotes and that ends up causing blockages in their tummies which means surgery) then a minimum of one hour a day cleaning their litter boxes (yes it will need to be scooped and cleaned daily) and food and water dishes cleaned.

They can smell but if cleaned regularly they'll smell (and feel) fine!
It is, in fact, legal to own a ferret in California. Why not go to a local pet store? Or adopt an unwanted one online -- the poor, adorable things need homes.
Good luck though, they're absolutely adorable creatures who need loving, caring homes which you can probably provide to him or her.

Ferrets are not allowed in California because of persons that "released" their ferret permitting it to muck up the organic eco-gadget. Thank the idiots who imagine domesticated animals belong in the wild.

ferrets are NOT legal in CA. If something happens and you need a vet or ferret supplies you're in trouble.

It is not legal to BUY one in California. However, if you buy one out of state and bring it in, many stores will sell feret food, and many vets will still work on them (if they are fixed).
