It's a mental illness. And really, if you had to have a mental illness, this is the one you would want. The reason being, this is an illness that can be controlled (for the most part) with medication.

Basically you have periods where you are UP...flying...going 100 miles and hour (or your brain is)...you are manic.

Then there are periods where you are DOWN...way down. Depressed.

Bi-Polar was once called Manic-Depressive. For the above reason.

You would be surprised just how many people function with the illness. Ted Turner is an example.

I hope this helps.

I think you are referring to the condition of being "Bipolar". "Bi" refers to "two" and "polar" refers to "poles" as in opposites, like the North and South pole. Given that explanation, "bipolar" describes the concept of two opposite ends (or poles) with the ability to go "up" or "down" theoretically. This is actually a condition describing the mental illness that is also known as "manic depression" where a person may move from being "manic" or hyperactive and easily distracted to being "depressed" and quite the opposite-apathy, little to no activity, sleeping and eating problems etc. There are varying levels of this but the basic idea is that a person moves between these two states. There are medications out there that are given to help people with this.

Bipolar disorder is also known as maniac-depression and is characterized by extreme cyclical mood swings. A person who is bipolar may go thru a maniac period for a while in which they have endless amounts of energy, talk excessively, buy things they don't need etc. Then things switch and they are extremely depressed for a while. This continues in an ongoing cycle. Medication and therapy can help.

its actually bi-polar and it means that you go through states of depression which are followed by states of extreme happiness. Its a very dangerous condition because when you go from a happy state into a state of depression suicide is usually at a very high risk. Its usually treated with medication in pill form and that usually keeps it under control.

essentually it means that you will change moods very suddenly.
