1+1 carries us into the next column. In decimal form, 1+1=2. In binary, any digit higher than 1 puts us a column to the left (as would 10 in decimal notation). The decimal number "2" is written in binary notation as "10" (1*2^1)+(0*2^0). Record the 0 in the ones column, and carry the 1 to the twos column to get an answer of "10." In our vertical notation,

1
+1
___
10

too many unknown factors here

are 1 and 1 numbers or some other symbol ?
is + a numeric addition operation or some other operation or some other symbol ?
assuming you are talking about adding 2 numbers together what is the number base ?

in short, since you have eliminated the conventional assumption of "number 1 plus number 1 in base 10" by saying 2 is not the answer then the answer you are looking for could be anything

i'll go for the answer :

1 + 1 = cactus flower

ah the timeless question 1+1... the answer to the problem 1+1 is whatever society has convinced you it is. Most say the answer is "2", but truly the answer lies in what kind of culture and civilization you live in. Thus, do not ask what the answer is--because there are infinite answers(for example the answers could be considered 3 or 4 or even 1685) --instead ask what system you live in and are part of.
