The Color Purple is a relevant title because toward the end of the book, Shug Avery and Celie are having a conversation while walking through a field of purple flowers. Shug says to Celie, "God gets mad when you don't notice the color purple..." The analogy is Celie living her life in the shadows...as Mister's abused wife, as caretaker to his children, and in being the 'ugly duckling.' Celie, herself, is the color purple. She eventually gets noticed, first by Shug, then by Mister, and ultimately her sister and children. This is one of my favorite stories EVER.

I think Purple symbolizes the movement for equality of African-Americans and equal rights.
