Coldplay. "Parachutes" is probably their best album, followed closely by "A Rush of Blood to the Head".

The Who. Those bands are not even in the same universe as them. The crappiest Who album - if there even is one - is infinitely better than anything those other bands could produce in 50 years.
Pick up a "best of" or comp album for starters. Then pick the songs you like from it and get the albums they're on.

"I can see for miles" from the Who Sell Out is timeless though if I wanted to pick a song now I would probably select Coldplay's God Put A Smile On Your Face or The Scientist.

In my opinion The Who and my favorite album of theirs has to be Quadrophenia. I can listen to the entire album and never get tired of it.
