Because it is our nature. If people were ever content with what they had, what else is the essence of living. It's the chase of what is unattainable (yet) that keeps us going. It's the new model of car, new jewelry, electronics, houses, islands, etc., etc. It's the love of someone who doesn't love us, it's the flower that's not in bloom, the summer in winter, and so on. That explains why even the richest of the rich are working their butts like maniacs, because nothing they have will ever satisfy them.

It's all in ones perspective. I know this first hand.
There was this day that I was having that I allowed every little thing just set me off, and I said out loud,' Oh, I hate my life. If I could......." I had to stop there because it suddenly occurred to me that I had, at that very moment, more than just a few of my wishes come true and I hadn't even noticed. I was going to school, I was living in this great house, I had a great job already. My son was happy, and I couldn't have been more oblivious. It was a shock to change perspective right at that moment and suddenly see things from the opposite extreme.

I think you answered your own question. They are not satisfied, and they expect things they have to make them satisfied. The truth is, satisfaction comes from within, not what you have. So, the reason why people are not satisfied with what they have? They think that they SHOULD be satisfied with it. The only thing they should be satisfied with is themselves.
