Both.
Brings them together as it promotes fair play, unity, equality, etc. Also lets nations enjoy a "friendly" game against one another.
Tears them apart as World Cups have caused many riots in years past which have torn countries apart.

It should bring them together, and most of the time, it does.
But sometimes it can tear them apart. That happens when stupid journalists don't even know what they write. Italy wins because of a controversial last-minute penalty, and Spanish papers write that the Italians are cheaters, bribers, mafiosi and they have always sucked at soccer, even when they won the World Cup in Spain in 1982. The journalist is talking (hopefully) about the soccer team, but any Italian would get offended by the tone of that article. I could understand such a reaction if I had read that in the Australian press. But that was an online newspaper from Malaga, Spain. Hellooooo, didn't they know that the referee was Spanish??? After all, he was the one who conceded the penalty...

I think it brings them together because I suppose that when players are out there they will play their best without any hard feelings. Sure there will be the pain of losing. But they all share a neat passion for soccer. They also respect each other as players. So overall I say the World Cup unites the world.

The World Cup brings people of one country together...and turns them against all the other countries. Then, after they start to lose and go home, they reunite, like say the South Americans unite with the remaining South American team(s) and so forth.

I think the WC is a fair tournament. I dont mind the format of the tournament. I enjoy watching the group stages where each team is guaranteed 3 games. 32 of the world's best Futball nations show up and face off for all the glory. This also gives the Asian and African teams a chance to know what they are up against and work even harder to improve their level of play to make themselves more competitive. I enjoy watching different styles of Futball rather than say just the European brand. South Americans, Asians and Africans also have unique styles of play which creates more of a mismatch between them and the european countries. This allows for exciting matchups.
So, in conclusion, the WC is a great tournament and it unites. What other sport do you know of that is this popular and that boasts a tournament of this magnitude with over 5 billion viewers worldwide!

Most definitely brings them together! It's GREAT to see so many cultures and people all talking about: FOOTBALL!
Even if you rip on another country, it's all done in good spirits- rivals during the game, and then share a drink after wards- that's the sporting way. Imagine if this was they way the world acted ALL the time??? We spend days and days talking about coaches, refs, PKs, red cards and watch these amazing athletes from all over the planet. It unites EVERYONE.
Instead of the alternative..... war, killings, misery, true hate.... :-(
LONG LIVE THE WORLD CUP, SPORTSMANSHIP, AND....FOOOOOOOOOTBALL!

FIREEEEE!
lol. I saw some groups (groupies) of fans, like Sweeden and England (UK) all hugged and dandy. "Tears them apart" comes as an english language game of words, that changed meaning right there and then didn't it. Look what C. Ronaldo and then that Brazilian chick wrapped in flag did? Would you attack or hate one of them? I love when players at the end of game congratulate each other, and when refs wish luck to players at the beginning. That is sooooo cool. Now, why cannot the rest of the world have sports instead of politics, I would vote for some cute-butt.
I LOVE SPORT!

I am going to differ...
Its not about the world cup, its about soccer in general...
IN central america they had a war because of national teams, and to think that central americans are very alike to each other. THey used to be one country, thats what i have heard anyway,
The english and the germans dont like each other because of past wars, yes, but i think soccer also seperates them
BUT i think th world cup is great, its the best thing in life

Apart. The problem has at least two angles. First, people can't be impartial. And second, many people don't really know about football and believe everything they hear. I will give you just one example; Many people, listening to other people, say that Ronaldinho is an extraordinary player and even , the best ever. He is average, and just in his country, I seen at least 20 better than him. Romario could run circles around him.
