As a sales coordinator at a hotel my staff would never except a tip just to get an upgrade. Most of the time all you have to do is ask and if there is one available there should not be a problem. A lot of times if you are a member of the hotels rewards program it is easier to get up grades. Although at every motel you should leave a tip in the room for the housekeeper who cleaned or will be cleaning the room after you leave.

Tipping a front desk clerk, this is not unheard of, but from a hotel managers point of view, any clerk caught upgrading a guest because they were tipped is open to termination...period.
As a manager it is my responsibility to verify all rates and room types every night, if a guest is upgraded without a managers approval, or if the rate is to low for the room type, then it is the employees butt!!
Free upgrades are given, but they are few and far between. When you have a 2500-5000 room inventory, it is easy to keep guests in the room type the purchased.

it depends on where you are going. i worked as a room assigner at the yacht and beach on Disney property for many years... and no Disney cast members are allowed to take money...but also the room assigner who sits in the back is the one who has final say over rooms, not the person checking you in.
you can call the hotel itself a few days before to ask, but requests are not 100% guaranteed. I once moved around a family with 10 different rooms for one person who promised to bring me chocolate when they checked in, you really are at the mercy of the room assigner :-) cause at Disney the managers would not even know how to assign a room if they wanted to!

No. But, I've found that if you call the hotel and ask for the name of the front desk manager and the fax number and fax a message to the front desk manager telling them you're coming to town for a special occasion and you'd really appreciate anything they can do to make it more special, you can reap nice benefits. I did this in 1999 when I took my mom to Vegas for her 50th birthday. I faxed the front desk manager a nice letter telling her it was my mom's first time to Vegas and her 50th birthday, so if there was anything that could be done to make it more special, it would be appreciated. We got a jacuzzi suite room for the $59 a night regular room rate. At the very least, you'll get a fruit basket.

I am working at the front desk right now (as we speak) at the country inns and suites, and I know in my hotel, we pre plan our rooms in the morning. If we are over sold in a room type we then start upgrading people. But I can guarantee my boss would not approve if we upgraded, if you offered me a tip. Sorry your $2 is not worth loosing my job.

I've heard that it does work. For $20 they may give you an upgrade.
However, all you have to do is ask when you check in if there are any upgrades available. If they have something available they will either upgrade you or give it to you for a small rate. But, don't expect to get any of the big suites, those are kept seperate.

It has worked for us before. Give the check-in person a $20 and asked for a room with a view or higher floor. It depends on how full they are.

The best people to tip well are the cocktail waitresses. Tip them good and you'll never go thirsty again!
