I ran into a lady at the nail salon today that had the same problem with her daughter. She made a deal with her daughter that if she'd stop biting her nails she'd take her for a manicure and pedicure. It worked and the girl was so happy. Maybe you could try that. Good luck.

When a person bites their nails it is generally boredom, habit and the last reason is because the cuticles are dry and the skin around the nails is hard and and that can hurt and be annoying so in trying to bite that away they also bite the nail. This is very hard to stop unless the child wants to stop. .Buy some good hand & nail cream and everytime you see her bite her nails hand her the cream to put on. It will soften around the nail and when she is concious of what she is doing this will help her control it. Once her nails grow enough I suggest you have fake nails put on her for a short while because they are almost impossible to bite and her hands will look pretty and she will take more pride in there look. Just keep it simple at her age. After she gets use to the fake nails she will stop biting because you can't bite them. A professional manacure will also help get her dead skin and cuticles in shape. She will be able to handle her own nails & take pride in them once the fake nails are taking off. It will probably take about 6 weeks with the fake's to help her stop.
Keep her busy so she does not have time to concentrate on her nails. Tell her everytime she has the urge to bite her nails to go and wash her hands throughly and put on the cream this very act might be enough.

I'm not sure if this thum-stops is the same thing I am going to suggest, BUT they do sell a liquid polish that taste s*it. It is designed specifically for nail biting kids. You brush it on and you can even tell the kid that it is special polish just for her.

There is an actual website called stopbitingnails.com. Maybe there's some interesting info there. If not, you could try going to google and typing in "how to stop biting nails" and I'm sure you'll get the info you need.

Nothing will work. It's a habit that is really really hard to break. I got acrylic nails so I bit on them, got the polish (who cares that I had a nasty taste in my mouth), tried the rubber band on the wrist (snap it hard when you find yourself starting to bite) you name it I probably tried it. It's a nasty disgusting habit and I cringe when I see other people do it but I can't stop doing it.

I did not stop until I was 12 and get braces. With them I could not bite my nails.

even as i became youthful, I used to chew my nails too. My mom stated that if i did not chew my nails by the week, on saturday she'd supply me a dollar. It made me end extremely quick. in straight forward words took like $3. Now i have not bitten my nails for like 4 years.

Wikipedia says it is very common.
28% to 33% of children ages 7-10 years old, 44% of adolescents, and 19% to 29% of young adults bite their nails.
They give a number of ways to stop it:

I knew an adult who bribed herself to stop biting her nails by promising herself a lovely ring. It takes 28 days to break a habit, so don't expect instant results.
