Well I know that in AZ if it is 118 degrees it really doesn't matter how much gas it uses. We always say don't start any thing with a person that doesn't have a working air conditioner in their car ( driving with the windows rolled down ) because they will hurt you at the temps it gets here they will be pretty cranky and easily agitated so don't start any trouble with them. and that is Not an urban myth just fact.

Like FrenchVanilla said, they tested it out on Mythbusters. They got worse gas mileage actually on the vehicle that ran with the windows open and no air conditioning on. At highway speeds the drag produced with the windows open decreases the gas mileage more than just leaving the windows up and running the a/c. But yes air conditioning does compromise fuel economy, but if you're hot, and going down the highway, you'd be better off turning the a/c on. For driving around town I definitely recommend leaving it off and rolling down the windows, as aerodynamics aren't near as much of a factor, not to mention the temperature difference for your engine in stop-and-go traffic.

Absolutely! You can lose as much as 8 or 9 miles per gallon depending upon wheather or not your vehicle has had a tune-up, and the condition of the a/c system . Turn your a/c on when you first get in your vehicle, but after you aare under way, open the windows and shut it off. You will save fuel, and get to breath the fresh air at the same time.

Yes,,,,using your a/c definitely affects your gas mileage. After Hurricane Katrina landfall we didn't have any gas stations operating. We quickly discovered that driving our work trucks at 45 mph without a/c greatly increased our range on a tank of fuel.

Running your a/c reduces your fuel efficiency by about 4 miles per gallon. Of course it can vary depending on the vehicle.

yes of course! u burn more gas a u crank up the air. i think this is because the gas is used to compress the air which in turn can make the air cold.

yes it does affect ur engine. the next time your idling turn off anything that makes noise such as ur radio and what not. turn ur ac on and off and listen. when u turn ur ac on the engine revs up and maybe ur fan will come on. when u turn it off ur engine idles back down.
when u run ur ac especially while climbing grades it puts more strain on ur engine causing u to burn more gas. when u drive with your ac on in city conditions u will burn more fuel.
only engines that are not affected by the ac are diesel powered engines as diesel burns slow unlike gas.

no worse than having your windows down, the drag against the car is the same as running the a/c
