I can't believe how disrespectful some people can be. It's ironic that protestors disrespect the very freedom that allows them to have such disrespect.
An American flag should never be "disposed" of but instead retired.
Never let the American flag touch the ground, the floor, or water. Place nothing on it. Never use the flag as drapery – use red, white, and blue bunting instead.
Clean the flag if it becomes soiled. Mend it if it is torn. When worn beyond repair, destroy it in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
The U.S. flag is more than just some brightly colored cloth…it is a symbol of our nation.
Seven red stripes and six white stripes; together they represent the original 13 colonies that gained us liberty.
The red stripes remind us of the lifeblood of brave men and women who were ready to die for this, their country.
The white stripes remind us of purity and cleanliness of purpose, thought, word and deed.
The blue is for truth and justice, like the eternal blue of the star-filled heavens.
The stars represent the fifty sovereign states of our union.
The U.S. flag should be treated with respect when it’s flying and it should be treated with respect when it’s being retired.
The American Creed states, "it is my duty to my county to love it, to respect its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies."
Therefore, we retire flags with dignity and respect when they become worn, torn, faded, or badly soiled.
A flag ceases to be a flag when it is cut into pieces. We cut the flag into four pieces: three red and white striped banners and the blue star field. We leave the blue field intact because no one should ever let the union be broken.
As the parts of the flag are placed in the fire remember…Old Flags never die, they just get fired up!
Maintain a vigil over the fire until no traces of the flag remnants remain. The ashes should be collected and buried.

Around this time of year, your local American Legion or another of those type groups usually dispose of old flags for you free of charge, I'd try contacting them.

The proper way to dispose of it is to burn it. Several times a year boy scouts and other groups hold ceremonies for doing it.

Call your local Boy Scout troop, or Military recruiter, and they will dispose of it for you. Please do not Throw it away, many many people have fought and died for the rights symbolized by that Flag. When I was a Scout we gladly disposed of many flags, so they won't wind up next to old diapers, and rotton food.

Give it to the American Legion. They have a ceremony once a year to dispose of them correctly.
