The Beatles are neither Overrated Or the Greatest band of all time.
The Beatles were an English pop and rock music group from Liverpool, who continue to be held in the very highest regard for their artistic achievements, their huge commercial success, and their ground-breaking role in the history of popular music. Consisting of John Lennon (1940–1980), Paul McCartney (1942–), George Harrison (1943–2001) and Ringo Starr (1940–), the group's innovative music and style helped define the 1960s. (1964-1970).

The Beatles were, by most definitions, the biggest musical act of the twentieth century. In the United Kingdom alone they have released more than forty different singles, albums and EPs that have reached number one. This kind of success has been repeated in many more countries and EMI estimated that by 1985, the band had sold over one billion records worldwide.[1]

Their early original material fused elements of early American rock 'n roll, pop, and R&B into a new form of popular Rock 'n Roll. The band almost single-handedly kick-started the British Invasion of the USA, laid the groundwork for the rock culture of the 1960s, and established the prototype for the "self-contained" rock group; meaning that they did not need songwriters from outside of the band. They helped pioneer more advanced, multi-layered arrangements in both Rock and Pop and were instrumental in the development of some of the 1960s dominant musical styles, such as folk-rock, hard rock and psychedelia.

To a significant extent, the impact of The Beatles extended well beyond their music. Their clothes, hairstyles, statements, and even choice of instruments made them trend-setters (see The Beatles' influence on popular culture) throughout the decade, whilst their growing social awareness - reflected in the development of their music - saw their influence extend into the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s.

To answer your question, I would recommend looking at AVrev's list of the top 10 bands of all time...

To celebrate their pending tenth anniversary on July 1, 2006, AVRev.com has compiled its list of the Top 100 Rock Bands of All Time. Unlike past lists that are based on mere opinion, the AVRev.com "Top Rock Bands" list uses the same type of analytical tools employed by sports franchises and applies them to rock bands to objectively determine which bands are the best. Among the categories considered were: U.S. Sales (100 points), Songs/Songwriting (100), Technical Ability (100), Live Performance (50), Consistency vs. Longevity (50) and Random (50). Random is a category that allows a judge to vote on how likely he or she is to want to hear a band's songs on their iPod playlist.

Topping the list with a total of 525 points was LED ZEPPELIN. All of the judges gave LED ZEPPELIN high marks not only for their songs/songwriting ability, but also their consistency as a band through the years.

The Top Ten is as follows:

01. LED ZEPPELIN - 525 points
02. THE BEATLES - 514 points
03. PINK FLOYD - 506 points
04. THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE - 503 points
05. VAN HALEN - 496 points
06. QUEEN - 493 points
07. THE EAGLES - 479 points
08. METALLICA - 468 points
09. U2 - 455 points
10. BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS - 454 points

So... there ya have it... hope that helps!

I think the Beatles are the greatest band ever because their personal as well as musical evolution from youthful innocence to seasoned maturity echoed the changes that were taking place not only in America but also globally.

When they first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, the US was still in mourning over the assassination of JFK that had happened only a couple months earlier.

The Beatles were a welcome distraction and a glimmer of hope to the young people who had had their security rocked to the core.

Later, as the domestic conflicts within America came to light, the Vietnam War raged and the corruption within our government was exposed, the Beatles musical transition captured their fans and we were transported along with them to a more mature place, opening our eyes, ears, and minds to the world around us.

Having been a lover of music since 1963, I can think of no other musical group that had the sustained impact on our culture for such a long time when in reality, they released their first album in 1963, their last studio album in 1970, and performed their last concert in the US in 1966.

What other musical group has attained that level of persuasive influence?

Just my opinion.

overrated is not the word to use. They are pioneers in rock for various reasons. They changed it so much, which is what made them so huge. That and they hit it off pretty well with the ladies. Maybe not the greatest band ever, but certainly the most influential of all time.

Overrated. But then again, I wasn't from that generation.
I think the greatest band ever doesn't exist because there can't be such thing. There are too many genres and too many bands out there that have succeeded but they aren't necessarily the greatest.

I think the Beatles were the best rock band ever. Their music evolved from standard rock and roll in the 1960s to very artistic music in the 1970s.

I don't know about greatest band ever, but in my opinion they changed music dramatically.. I don't think any of them were great technical musicians or singers.

But they sure came along at the right time - look, style, accents, hair, sound

I was fortunate to see the Beatles become popular in England in 1963, then again in the states in 1964.
