Tough call, but I think I'd say Ted Hughes. If contemporary meant within the last century, then I'd go with Wallace Stevens.

well maybe not THE greatest but ....i would say it would be a nutty woman named yasmin ahmad
also a great/ controversial filmmaker in malaysia
and she's still alive so it's convinient to admire her as she's free to reply your emails.
