Christian music is as much about "ministry" as it is about music. Music is almost secondary and popularity should be third. If you want to "become as big a singer as Amy Grant" maybe "secular" music is the way to go.
But if you are serious start in your local church. Sing on the praise team. Meet similar minded musicians at chuch or maybe in the praise band. Christian music is a great field with great music. But a lot of times it can be a selfless career. The person who should get the attention is God, not you. Thats what Christian music is about. Giving glory to God and directing people to God.
I sincerely wish you the best.

I was a lead singer in a Christian band for nearly two years. The best way to start is to just learn some simple praise songs and slowly work your way up from there. Never make you're performances about your own voice. But all of your energy and focus towards glorifying God. When God is glorified there will be this amazing energy put into your music that will touch people. Good luck!!
