I'm looking for any fantasy books (specifically modern fantasy books) with female protagonists (more specifically, a female vampire, werewolf, etc.). Does anyone have any recommendations?

"Mists of Avalon" by Marion Zimmer Bradley is a classic feminist retelling of the King Arthur legend.

If you're into lesbian vampires, I recommend "The Gilda Stories" by Jewelle Gomez.

Many of the Pern books from Anne MacCaffrey may be good choices. In the realms of fantasy and Sci-fi I really like Stephen R. Donaldson. His books Through a mirror or something. A two book set about a woman who traveled to a fantasy world through a mirror, very cool. Also, the second Thomas Covenenat the Unbeliever set had a female protaganist.

Well the book I'm about to recommend doesn't really meet the "female protagonists (more specifically, a female vampire, werewolf, etc.)." but it's a really awesome book, I just finished reading it, it's one of many great books written by this author. It's called "Sword Of Darkness" by Kinley MacGregor. These are parts of the summary on the back "The new king of Camelot wears no shining armor: Arthur and his knights have fallen and a new king rules... A scared, forsaken youth has become the most powerful... Kerrigan has long ceased to be human... Seren dreams of becoming her own woman... Kerrigan's goal is simple: barter or kill Seren... she is the only person who holds no fear of him... kindness is weakness and a king who harbors any sort of compassion loses his throne... will either bring salvation to both of them...or death" I hope that intriged you somewhat. If you want more info on the book I'm pretty sure you can just Yahoo or Google Search it, but if that doesn't work you can email me @ doubleabattery13@yahoo.com for more info. ^_^

Also I would love to recommend "Currant Events" by Piers Anthony, I'm actually reading this one right now, but it is quite interesting. It's actually a part of a series of books, that can be read together or separate.

I'm also getting ready to read "Dark Rivers of the Heart" by Dean Koontz after I read "Currant Events". It seems appealing to me just by the tittle and that is why I picked it up. I am assuming it will be a great read.

And I would also like to recommend "Book 1 & 2 of The Bronze Chronicles - Mystic Warrior & Mystic Quest" by Tracy & Laura Hickman.

I have also read the Da Vinci Code and would like to recommend that book as well, but only if you are not weak minded and will blindly follow through with everything the book says or appears to say.

Harry Potter books are always a good read and I love re-reading them any time I have the chance. They are by J.K. Rowling.
I also recently picked up what appears to be an interesting book judging by the cover. The title is "Bergdorf Blondes" by Plum Sykes. It seems quite interesting and after reading the rest of the books on my list I look forward to reading this.

I know none of these besides probably the first recommendation fits your question but I just thought I would let you know about some other fantastic books.

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. Very female dominated telling of the Arthur legend.

Try some of the Anne Rice books. Queen of the Damned, for instance is a good book.

Well if you like fanasty with animals, try this book series by Kathern Lasky. Gaurdians of Ga'Hoole. There are 10 books now. You can buy them at Borders in the Teenager, or children big chapter books section. Gaurdians of Ga'Hoole and Ledgens of Ga'Hoole are books about owls. They are bundles of fun!

Well, not vampire or werewolf (those came later) but Weird Sisters by Terry Pratchett, as well as Lords and Ladies.

The king of shannara, the sword of shannara, the elfstones of shannara, the wishsong of shannara, and the scions of shannara (4 book series) all by Terry Brooks, all good books, if you read them in order. keep in mind, that the king of shannara is a prequal.
