Often times, people answer this question with Keith Moon. And yes, Keith Moon was one hell of a drummer. But, people forget about someone else who is still around... Ginger Baker. Most famous for his work with Cream and Blind Faith. Ever listened to Cream's song "Toad"?
The live version of that was a nearly 10 minute drum solo. Recently Cream had a Reunion for the first time in like 35 years and guess what? He's still got it after 35 years.

Alex Van Halen is an awesome drummer. Neil Peart (or however you spell his name) from Rush rocks too. To all those who said "that guy from Def Leppard" : Please! He has a specially made digital drum machine that does most of the work for him. All he does is hit the cymbals and snare drum once in a while.
