yes he did. the thig is everyone thinks the story is about luke and leia in the episodes 4-6. but if you read the titles and watch them in order 1-6 you see that the movies are really about anikin skywalker his intro to the force and his fall from the light side then his redemption from the dark side. ( the title "return of the jedi" refers to darth vader turning away from the dark side becoming a jedi again. not about luke.)

From what I have read, Lucas had the story for the first 3 movies planned out which included a back story (details of what led up to the story being told but not included in the movie). It wasn't until much later that he decided to actually make the next three movies (the prequels) and one of the reasons it took so long was he was having trouble writing them. This is evidenced by Episode 1 whick was panned by the critics as well as many Star Wars fans. Episode 2 was better but it is Episode 3 that really saved the second trilogy because it really answered the questions of what brought about the events of Episodes 4-6.

From years of geekdom research: Lucas laid out the framework for the first movie, and realized that he had enough material for 3 films. That, after MANY revisions, became the original trilogy (episodes 4-6). He originally wanted to tell an epic story spanning at least 3 generations, with 3 trilogies spaced about 25-50 years apart. He's said that he's no longer interested in making the last trilogy. The basis for the six films we have, however were around from the start, although there were enough revisions in ideas between the productions of trilogy 1 and 2 to account for the "patchy" feel.

Please see the Wikipedia article on "Star Wars" under the section "scripts" for more information. In a nutshell, Lucas had the broad outline of a six-part story together in 1973, only it wasn't in six parts but rather a complete saga. Over three decades, of course parts had to be rewritten to bring the prequels in line with the main (originally the middle) trilogy of Episodes IV, V, and VI. An early plan was to release IV, V, and VI together, but in the late seventies a science fiction War and Peace would have been beyond the attention spans of movie audiences.
Not only science fiction movies, but all movies require a certain suspension of disbelief (e.g. that a man can leap tall buildings in a single bound) to work. Unless you're a movie critic, just sit back and enjoy them.

From what I understand he planned on the first movie and that was it. After Star Wars became a huge success he decided on expanding the story and later renamed it Episode 4. After Return of the Jedi I think he had some idea of where he wanted to go with the next movies(ie the story of Anakin Skywalker) but still screwed up some continuity issues.

He claims he did, but I don't believe it. No one had any idea that the first movie would be as popular as it was when it first came out, including Lucas. The first movie had a beginning a middle and an end. The second movie seemed like it might lead somewhere and then the entire series went in the toilet after that. IMHO.

He wrote EP 4,5,6 as one, but due to time restraints, he divided it into thirds and if the first one was sucessful, then he would do the rest.
But I don't think he had EP 1,2,3 written out, maybe just a vague idea about what would happen ( ie Anakin into Vader, Clone Wars, ect. )
