That's not the reason. The reason is we have a represetative democracy. Those gifts belong to the office and by extention of that, to the people, not the man. Putting them in a presidential museum is a symbolic gesture of the difference between a democracy and a dictatorship. Presidents serve....they do not rule. There is a HUGE difference.

My late brother-in-law was a Secret Service Agent, and told us of many lovely and valuable gifts that Presidents were compelled to pass along to the Museum. Of course, he said, there were also a few bizarre, useless and downright weird gifts that certain Presidents were quite happy to donate!
