It depends on when you took it. If you believed all the hype printed on the box of the pregnancy test and took it days before your period was due, then it is *highly* inaccurate. If you waited until a week after the first day your period was due, then it is very accurate. Even at this point, there *can* be false negatives.
However, there are other possible explanations for why you could be late. Did you have any particular stress in your life 2-5 weeks ago? This could have caused you to ovulate late. Your period is *never* late; it always follows ovulation by about 2 weeks (12-16 days is normal for *most* women), but it can seem to be "delayed" if ovulation was late.
If you *did* ovulate late, your period would have been later than you expected. Therefore, while you may *think* you are testing 2 days after your period was due, it could be that it's a week *before* your period is due. It could even be longer than that. In this case, retesting a week later may *still* not be late enough to get an accurate result. Unless you are certain when you ovulated, there is no way to know for sure just when your period would be due, so no way to know when to test for the most accurate results.

Can I still be pregnant if the test is negative (have a "false negative")? In a word, yes. You could be testing too early (before your baby is making enough pregnancy hormone to be detected by the test.) And some women (this is fairly rare, but possible) never get a positive urine test even when they're definitely pregnant (for some reason the hormone doesn't make it into their urine.) I have a friend who didn't get a positive HPT until 25 DPO! (With her second baby, a test at 23 DPO was negative . . . but a test on 30 DPO was positive. Oddly enough, with #3, her positive test came at only 12 DPO.) If you get a negative test but think you might be preggo anyway, wait a couple of days (giving the hCG hormone time to build up) and try again. It's not over until the fat lady sings-- and your period crashes the party.
If you are not monitoring your fertility in any way (OPK's, charting cervical mucus or basal temperature, ultrasounds) it becomes extra-tricky. There are two parts to every menstrual cycle: from the start of your period to ovulation, which can vary quite a bit in length, and from ovulation to your next period, which is usually consistent in length. (This second half is known as the "luteal phase," and the normal range is 10-16 days. It's normal for your typical luteal phase to vary by a day or two. For example, mine is normally 11 days, but 10 and 12 are not unheard of either. I have also had a couple of longer ones by total fluke.)
Because ovulation can happen at any time, it's possible your egg was delayed for some reason (stress, illness, travel, excitement.) This doesn't mean your period is actually "late" (it could arrive within the normal 10-16 days after ovulation), but rather than your entire cycle was delayed due to a later-than-usual ovulation.

Most pregnancy tests are 99.9% accurate. It could be false if you took the test too early and the hormone HCG levels are not being detected in your urine. You could try again in about a week and if it still comes out negative but you don't feel like your body's the same, have a professional run a test on you. They'll have much more accurate results for you.

Pregnancy tests are 99% accurate, if you follow the instructions correctly.
However, I do have one caution for you. Even though some pregnancy tests claim to be able to detect if a woman is pregnant as early as 5-7 days before an expected period, it is not the case for all women. As we are all different, and all produce the pregnancy hormone hCG at a different rate, some women (myself included) have to wait to the day our periods are due, or even a few days afterwards to get an accurate result. If you feel as though you are having symptoms of pregnancy, or if your period still hasn't arrived in another couple of days, I would suggest that you take another test.
Alternatively, you could ask for a blood test from the doctors. They are able to detect pregnancy in a woman as early as 6 days after conception. This test is quantitative as well as qualitative. This is because in a woman who is not pregnant, the amount of the hormone hCG is less than 5mg in her blood. When a woman is pregnant, this level rises and doubles in a 48 hour period. Hence, six days after conception, the levels would have risen to a level where pregnancy is indicated.
I'm going to include the link to a trying to conceive forum that I think you might find useful. It's full of supportive women with boundless knowledge about these issues. I learnt so much there that I doubt I would have learnt otherwise.

I took a pregnancy test when I was 3 weeks pregnant, it showed up negative. I still had a notion that I was pregnant, with several symptoms - and had another taken at 5 weeks pregnant. Found out that week that I was pregnant with twins.
Pregnancy tests say that they are 99.9% accurate. If you took a test too early, such as before your missed period, it will show a negative. If you still feel like you may be pregnant, make an appointment with your doctor. They may be able to confirm pregnancy/no pregnancy via ultrasound, if they have one in their office.

There are often false negatives but rarely a false positive. You may have tested too early or you may have hormone levels that are too low to be detected yet. Wait another week and test again, if you still feel unsure go to the doctor and ask for a blood test. These are much more sensitive and accurate.

If you think you are Pregnant, I would suggest a First Response. That pregnancy test can detect the lowest amount of HCG (the pregnancy hormone) in a womans body, and you can take it 4 days before your missed period. If you get a negitive wait a few days and retest, this is because the HCG levels double every 48 hours resulting in a positive pregnancy test. GOOD LUCK!!! :)

False negatives are more likely than false positives due to the 99.9% accuracy rate. If could be a false negative if you took the test too early and the hormone HCG is not being detected in your urine. IF your period is late already, and the test is negative, most likely it is accurate and your body is running late. Take another one in a few days if you still haven't gotten your period.

ok it depends on where you're at in your cycle that the test could be neg. see if you had drink something right before you tests than you could of dilute the test, and then you need to use your first morning urine so that it can be more concentraded, so really it depends on if cycle is late or if it's too early to detect, so i say give it a couple of days and test early in the morning with a first respones test those are the best when it comes to early testing! but don't drink anything for about 2 hrs if you don't take it in the mornings?
