My first year of high school I had a History teacher that I feared and respected. He lectured 3 days a week and book work 1 day and test the next. Everything he lectured on had to be in our notebooks and 1/3 of our grade was our notesbooks. I Got the highest grade in the class with a 95. He called us all up to the desk and would show us our grades and he said to me you got the highest grade but you can do better. The next time I got a 99 he called me up again and said I don't give 100's that would be pefect and we all have room for improvement. I was always afraid of him but I had no reason, he just wanted the best out of all of us and he usually got it. I never worked so hard to please a teacher in my life or after him. He died that summer of a massive heart attack.

Winson Perry, my Math teacher. I went to school to turn in my books because at 16 I decided I was getting married and quitting school. The last class was Winson Perry's class. He gave the class work to do and I just sat there not doing the work. He asked me why I was not doing the work so I told him he was my last class and I had turned in all my books because I was quitting to get married. He looked at me and laughted. He said, Well, Miss Huff, in 5 years you will have a house full of kids, your husband will be out with the boys, you will not have enough money to pay your bills because you do not have the money or education. He made me think what that life would be like and I said to him, thank you for making me see what the next 5 years would look like so I got all my books back and graduated on June 10, 1970. Also by the way that guy married someone else because he said I was to innocent for him. I was because I was a virgin. Thank god I did not leave school, went to the proms, partied with my friends and have traveled all over the world. Winson Perry is my hero. Ask Zella

Her name was Miss Lee and I was in 4th grade. She taught me the value of an extensive vocabulary. I also learned that when it is 1965, you are a teacher and you become pregnant and are not married you are quietly swept out the door with no regard for the young lives she impacted and we loved her. We should have been given an explanation and she should have been allowed to stay.

I had an English/Lit teacher in high school, that agreed with all the students that English/Lit was a boring subject. She always managed to think outside the box.

When we were reading the book, "1984", I mentioned to her that the album "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" by Black Sabbath had references to the book on it. She asked me to bring the album in, and we listened to the entire album in class, then had a discussion about it.

On one of our final exams, she went around to each student, and asked them one question. If they answered correctly, they passed the exam.

I was lucky enough to be chosen the following year to be her student assistant, and I learned from her, that patience and humor are good things to have.

A Scotswoman, Mrs. Fairweather, who instilled in me a life long love affair with reading, expression and language. Put music in my soul and opened the world to me. Also taught me to speak up and be true to myself. God bless her soul!
